Herb Society of America
Hill Country UnitWho Are We?
The mission statement of the Herb Society of America is to “promote the knowledge, use and delight of herbs through educational programs, research and sharing the experience of its members with the community”. The Society is committed to protecting our global environment for the health and well-being of humankind and all growing things. We encourage gardeners to practice environmentally sound horticulture. The Motto of the Society is taken from the herbalist, John Parkinson: “For Use and Delight”
Herb Of The Month
Yarrow (Achillea millefolium).
- Yarrow has been used since ancient times. In fact, the Achillea portion of its name stands for Achilles, who apparently used yarrow to stop blood flow from the wounds of soldiers during the Trojan war. It is also nicknamed woundwort, bloodwort, and nosebleed.
- Native Americans used yarrow extensively for its healing properties. They also used it ritually for cleansing and spiritual protection. The Navajo called it “Life Medicine.”
- Both flowers and the leaves contain potential medicinal properties. The fragrant flowers can be dried or used fresh to make attractive bouquets.
- Yarrow contains properties that may help stop stomach cramps and fight infection. It also has been used for eczema, wound healing, nosebleeds, and reducing inflammation. It is also used as an insect repellent.
-
Yarrow is a perennial that has a variety of colors of flowers. However, the native or wild yarrow has white flowers. It blooms in summer and attracts pollinators.
-
Yarrow grows 3 feet tall and prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It is drought tolerant and low maintenance; a great choice for sustainable landscapes.
